چکیده

The Neotropics is the most species-rich area in world, and mechanisms that generated maintain its biodiversity are still debated. This paper contributes to debate by investigating evolutionary biogeographic history of genus Ceiba Mill. (Malvaceae, Bombacoideae). comprises 18 mostly Neotropical species, largely endemic two major biomes, seasonally dry tropical forests (SDTFs) rain forests. Its species among characteristic elements SDTF, one threatened biomes tropics. Phylogenetic analyses DNA sequence data (from nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacers [nrITS] for 30 accessions representing 14 Ceiba) recovered as monophyletic. phylogeny showed geographic ecological structure three main clades: (i) a forest lineage nine C. pentandra sister remaining species; (ii) highly supported clade composed schottii aesculifolia from Central American Mexican plus samauma semi-humid, inter Andean valleys Peru; (iii) South SDTF including 10 showing little variation. Within this clade, no represented multiple were resolved We demonstrate patterns age, monophyly, previously reported within Leguminosae family not shared Ceiba, suggesting further phylogenetic studies unrelated groups required understand general patterns.

Do chromosome numbers reflect phylogeny? New counts for Bombacoideae and a review of Malvaceae s.l.

UNLABELLED • PREMISE OF THE STUDY Whole genome duplication (WGD) and specific polyploidy events marked turning points for angiosperm genome structure and evolution. Therefore, cytogenetic studies of polyploidy-prone groups such as the tropical Malvaceae and plant formations such as as the Brazilian Cerrado have gained further importance. We present new chromosome counts for Cerrado Bombacoide...

Phylogenetic relationships of Malvatheca (Bombacoideae and Malvoideae; Malvaceae sensu lato) as inferred from plastid DNA sequences.

Previous molecular phylogenetic analyses have revealed that elements of the former families Malvaceae sensu stricto and Bombacaceae together form a well-supported clade that has been named Malvatheca. Within Malvatheca, two major lineages have been observed; one, Bombacoideae, corresponds approximately to the palmate-leaved Bombacaceae, and the other, Malvoideae, includes the traditional Malvac...

Nuclear microsatellite variation in Malagasy baobabs (Adansonia, Bombacoideae, Malvaceae) reveals past hybridization and introgression.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS Adansonia comprises nine species, six of which are endemic to Madagascar. Genetic relationships between the Malagasy species remain unresolved due to conflicting results between nuclear and plastid DNA variation. Morphologically intermediate individuals between distinct species have been identified, indicative of interspecific hybridization. In this paper, microsatellite dat...

The history of introduction of the African baobab (Adansonia digitata, Malvaceae: Bombacoideae) in the Indian subcontinent

To investigate the pathways of introduction of the African baobab, Adansonia digitata, to the Indian subcontinent, we examined 10 microsatellite loci in individuals from Africa, India, the Mascarenes and Malaysia, and matched this with historical evidence of human interactions between source and destination regions. Genetic analysis showed broad congruence of African clusters with biogeographic...

Development and characterization of EST-SSR markers in Bombax ceiba (Malvaceae)1

PREMISE OF THE STUDY Bombax ceiba (Malvaceae), commonly known as silk cotton tree, is a multipurpose tree species of tropical forests. Novel expressed sequence tag-simple sequence repeat (EST-SSR) markers were developed and characterized for the species using transcriptome analysis. METHODS AND RESULTS A total of 33 new EST-SSR markers were developed for B. ceiba, of which 13 showed polymorph...
